"Great value for money"

I've stayed here on 5-6 different occasions over the past 3 years. The staff are excellent, pool great and the breakfast huge. Ask for an upgrade (300bt a night) to a room with an excellent view over BKK. Near the airport expressway so quick and easy for transfers.

"Fair location, clean, good value for money."

I have had occasion to stay at the Ramada D'MA on two dates during 2009, the principal purpose being to attend two academic conferences as a delegate. The outside of the premises is modestly imposing in the kind of unnecessarily baroque, neo-glitzy style so beloved of mid-range Bangkok hotels competing in a fairly crowded sector. Inside, the reception area is conspicuously spacious and decorated in Italianate-style marble and boasts a grand sweeping staircase that sinuously winds up towards the first floor business section. Tres chic, n'est ce pas? :)

The guest rooms are suitably cool and welcoming, with a nice, wide, comfortable place to hang your head, thankfully unencumbered by crawly things that usually exhibit a taste for human blood. Always a bonus! Moreover, the rooms are cooled by (relatively) silent air conditioning alongside adequate bathrooms that, whilst being far from opulent, nonetheless provide the necessities expected of a 3-star establishment, and all the fittings and fixtures actually work well. For the TV addicts, there is the usual flat-screen device that provides a comprehensive range of channels to suit most major language speakers, and naturally wih the ubiquitous English language services.

Descending back down to the ground floor, one will find the restaurant/breakfast/dining area; the Ramada newbie should be happy with this. Okay, the views aren't much to describe on the habitual postcards home, but the area is roomy, and the food buffet section in the middle offers a wide selection of victuals to satisfy all but the most epicurean of palates. In other words: the grub's good, cosmopolitan, wholesome, and plentiful.

A word or two about the staff: on the whole, a hotel is only as good as the people that run it, and the Ramada D'MA's main strength, in my humble opinion, is its employees. Friendly and helpful, even if the waiters in the restaurant are constantly hovering around to ensure that your glass of water in your glass is always topped up to the very brim. That's not a fault in my view, merely a sign that these kids are eager to please and genuinely decent and engaging in that inimitable Thai way.

The bar (for want of a better word) is small and a bit disappointing. That said, there are innumerable premises dispensing alcohol and other, err, things a mere taxi ride away, down on Sukhumvit Road, as well as other hotels nearby (Bangkok Palace, Westin) that have better bars. Note; how long it takes to get there to Sukhumvit depends on the traffic on Soi 3 down towards where one may catch the BTS from Nana.

A word to the wise, however, for you lot out there tempted by Bangkok's notorious pleasures of the flesh: the Ramada is apparently not 'guest friendly', so if you want to invite a 'guest' to your room with a view to entering (!) into earnest discussions about south Asian political economics, or perhaps for a quiet game of Scrabble or Connect 4, the hotel will allegedly levy a charge for this 'service'. I don't know how much this is, but don't expect to waltz towards the lifts (or elevators, for those that bemusedly mangle the Queen's English) with your night's dancing partner without being stopped and required to replenish the hotel coffers. Now., this may not be strictly true and you may dance the eternal rumba of love to your heart's content without any lightening of your wallet at all; but, be mindful people.

On balance, I would heartily recommend the Ramada D'MA; perhaps the most ringing endorsement I may offer is this: if you're there early to mid July this year, watch out for the slightly crazy English guy with a face like a bag of walnuts and a graceful dance style to die for. That'll be me - back there again ...:-)
