Likes: the price, the spa, the staff, the location, the restaurant
Dislikes: the bathroom *is* the shower, lack of decoration in the rooms
For the price, this was an excellent value very near the old town with internet cafes and used book stores nearby. I can't say enough good things about the location! The staff were very helpful in arranging activities and pleasant whenever I had other requests. The rooms are smallish but the A/C worked wonderfully, there was hot water and it felt very safe.

Situated in a great location for the main attractions of Chiang Mai so it was walking distance to everything we wanted to see but not on a noisy main street. The hotel also had character as most of the decor had a Thai feel. The members of staff were welcoming and willing to help. We would certainly go back to this hotel if visiting Chiang Mai again.

Good location and friendly staff
by Simon and Inge BECK from France(Tuesday, June 30, 2009)
Overall
Our first impression was that the room was not particularly well appointed with a wardrobe (2 hangers) and only two flat surfaces - a bedside table entirely filled by a lamp and telephone and a small cupboard supporting the TV. However more hangers and a table were quickly provided when we asked. On the plus side the staff were unfailingly courteous, friendly and helpful. We organised several trips with the help of the hotel staff and all were excellent. The in-house traditional Thai massage facility was respectable, friendly, professional and good value. The location (outside the old city walls but close to the Tha Pae Gate) makes this hotel really handy for short evening strolls to restaurants and bars after a long day of sight-seeing. A small internet cafe and laundry opposite was very handy as were the three (!) second-hand bookstores within metres of the hotel.
Would we use the Montrara Happy House again? Maybe there are better appointed hotels in Chiang Mai at the same price but for the location, friendly staff and good massages it would be hard to beat the Montrara so the answer is certainly yes.

This is a nice, clean hotel, good-value-for-money. The staff was very friendly. They were more than happy to watch our valuables every day, such as laptop computer, that we didn't want to leave in the room. One word of warning: If you rent a car, there's no place to park. There isn't even a place for rental scooters

Prime location within walking distance to markets & old city area
by Glenn Raymond Kennedy from Australia(Friday, June 26, 2009)
Overall
Just like a home away from home - located in quiet side street; has a lovely ground floor open dining area for breakfasts and drinks. The lounge / reception area houses internet, TV and background music. The staff are very friendly and helpful and on hand 24/7. Located within close walking distance to all markets and old city attractions, shops, transport etc. The hotel has a distinctly aged chic asian atmosphere which is very endearing. Our room was spacious, equipped with a comfortable canopied bed, TV, a/c and separate bathroom, boasting bath & shower! If it's modcon you're looking for, then go elsewhere but if it's a comfy and homely atmosphere you want, then go no further! Definitely the place to stay if you want to feel like you "belong in the neighbourhood".

The rooms are lovely and comfortable. The rest of the guesthouse is beautiful and welcoming. The water is hot. The breakfast is great. The staff are wonderfully friendly and helpful, they really can't do enough to point you in the right direction or help you with a problem. The location is fantastic. I've stayed here every time I've come to Chiang Mai and I'll stay every time I go in the future!

Warm, convenient place to stay
by Edward C Maher from United States(Monday, February 23, 2009)

Happy House was truly that. The staff was helpful, the rooms tastefully done and the restaurant was fine.
My only negative was that the place could use some attention to physical details that need fixing up. For instance, the shower head in our bathroom was aimed wrongly. If I was 7 feet tall, it might have hit me. The window gasket was falling off and left that way.

Great until check-out
by Steven Houghton from United States(Sunday, February 22, 2009)
Overall
We had a very pleasant stay at Montrara Happy House Hotel. Good location and staff were very nice. I was ready to leave a rave review. Unfortunately upon check-out I had a negative experience that counter set those good feelings. I have two wireless enabled devices. Even though they advertise free wireless access I was unable to connect with either of my computers. None of the staff could help me. The night before leaving I had a very important e-mail to send and once again no one could help me get on-line. So, I asked whether I could use the computer in the lobby for free (normally there is a charge) just to send my e-mail since no one could provide tech assistance. The night staff person said yes, I could. The next day the manager of the hotel charged me for using the internet. Even after my explanation of the situation he would not remove the fee. It was a very small amount but his unwillingness to understand my frustration at the internet situation will stop me from returning to the hotel unless there is a management change.

Perfect place
by Christopher Somsen from Netherlands(Friday, February 20, 2009)
Overall
Montrara Happy House is a cozy and beautifully decorated hotel close to the old city quarters of Chiang Mai. The rooms are comfortable and quiet, and thanks to the care taken to decorate the rooms and bathrooms, you feel directly at home; the rooms have a personal athmosphere, no anonymous hotel-furniture here. In the vicinity of the hotel are some nice restaurants and lunch-rooms and for those who like cycling, there are bike-rental shops nearby. I can definitely recommend Montrara Happy House to those who like to treat themselves to a splash of luxury and personal attention, instead of the average uninspiring rooms one generally finds elsewhere. The croissants at breakfast are good too!

I would make this my home
by Dr. Volker Kurze from Munich, Germany(Friday, February 20, 2009)
Overall
If I only could, I would live there permanently. I stayed for two weeks. The hotel and the restaurant has the friendliest staff I can imagine. Unlike anonymous big and expensive chains, this place makes you feel like what you always wanted your home to be. In the restaurant I got the best food, cooked and served when, how and what I wanted. The restaurant has an open space and a terrace for inside and outside seating and dining. There is Wifi internet access for free in the hotel rooms, which are cleaned spotless every day by very helpful and friendly staff. They also provide prompt and effective laundry service in-house. There is also a spa annexed to the hotel (entry from inside the hotel). There, the friendly receptionist arranges excellent treatments according to the customer's liking, at a good price. The location of the hotel is in a back street, very near the eastern Thapae city gate (easy to find for taxi drivers). The location is both very central and very quiet: hardly any traffic in the small street, no disco or anything noisy within earshot. Everything interesting is in walking distance, or you take a tuk-tuk from the nearby stand. Very conveniently located for transportation.
Upon request, the hotel receptionist arranges day tours with outside tour operators who pick up their customers from the hotel. Very efficient and reliable. I am very grateful to the managers and the staff for making me feel so much at home and I can't wait to go back.

The hotel is in a really good location. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Decor really cool, very artistic. The only negative was that 1st room I had could have used a bit more of a clean in the bathroom. Nothing disgusting, just looked as if that room had not been used in a while, so it needed a spot clean / dusting here and there. However, 2nd room I was in was much better.
Overall, it was an excellent value for the price. Also have to repeat that the staff was really great. Would definitely recommend hotel to others going to Chiang Mai.
